Strategy Subgroup

The Governance and Communications group is a subgroup of the WYLDA Executive.

WYLDA's Governance and Communications subgroup aims:

  • To develop and improve WYLDA's governance, including transparency and accountability of decision making
  • To develop and improve WYLDA's engagement with its members and other service users
  • To develop and improve communications about WYLDA's role, activities and impact with members and wider stakeholders.

Membership and Meetings

The Governance and Communications group meets approximately every 6 weeks, and reports back to the Executive group on their progress and recommendations.

Due to the potentially delicate nature of governance issues, the Governance and Communications subgroup is currently only open to WYLDA Executive Group members.

Members of the Governance and Communications subgroup (correct at August 2009) are:

Julie Wilkes Voluntary Action Wakefield
David Wears, West Yorkshire Learning Consortium
Fawzir Mir, PERS
Jill Jones, WYCAS
Richard Jackson, Voluntary Action Leeds
Soo Nevison, Voluntary Action Calderdale
Matilda Koroveshi, Regional Forum (subgroup co-ordinator)

Work so far

At the beginning of 2008, WYLDA's Governance group and its Communications group merged in order to collaborate on WYLDA's relationship with its members.

In 2008, we undertook a membership review, and introduced full and associate membership categories for the first time. We have spoken to members about how to get involved in WYLDA's work, updated the information we hold on our member organisations, and made sure that our messages are getting out to the right people. See Who Is WYLDA for a list of our members.

The Governance and Communications group have also championed bulletins from the Executive Group meetings. These bulletins are concise summaries of the main discussion points or points of interest from the Executive meetings, and intend to improve communications and transparency between the Executive and ordinary members, without having to work through lengthy meeting minutes and papers.

The bulletins have been very well received by our members and members of the district infrastructure consortia. One member commented:

Just to say I enjoyed the bulletin and found it useful as it helped me keep in touch with what WYLDA is involved in.

You can download the bulletins from the Executive group webpage.

Future plans

The Governance and Communications subgroup's next priority is reviewing WYLDA's communications strategy. We want to make sure that we bring people together in the right ways at the right times, that we have effective channels for at getting our messages out, and that we are listening to the voices of our members and wider stakeholders.

We will also look for better ways to analysis and communicate who does what in West Yorkshire third sector infrastructure, and to keep up to date with who our strategic stakeholders are.
